MAKE A DONATION

  • The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i depends on donations from the community to support our mission of sharing the history, heritage and culture of the evolving Japanese American experience in Hawai‘i.
  • Cash, securities, real estate and other assets can be donated to the Cultural Center.

CASH

  • Also includes checks and money orders
  • If the gift is mailed prior to the end of the calendar year and you itemize your tax returns, you’re eligible for a tax deduction for that year.
  • You may deduct up to 50% of your adjusted gross income for charitable gifts of cash
  • Gifts that exceed the 50% AGI limit may be carried over and deducted in the following five tax years.

SECURITIES

  • Donated securities may be stocks or bonds
  • If you donate securities you’ve held for more than one year and it has increased in value, you are entitled to a federal income tax deduction for the full fair market value of the securities on the date of the gift, up to a maximum deduction of 30% of your adjusted gross income for the tax year if you itemize your returns.
  • If you donate securities you’ve held for under a year and you itemize your tax returns, you are entitled to a federal income tax deduction for only the purchase price of the securities.
  • If you donate securities that have depreciated during your ownership, the Cultural Center suggests you sell the securities, take the tax loss and donate the cash proceeds from the sale.
  • To donate securities to the Cultural Center, please complete the “Securities Donation” form. Included in the form are transfer instructions.

REAL ESTATE

  • Unencumbered, marketable real estate may be donated to the Cultural Center.
  • The Cultural Center will consider accepting homes, condominiums, vacation homes, vacant land, rental property or other such property.
  • Real estate received will be sold at the earliest possible convenience
  • Your donation of real estate may entitle you to a charitable deduction of the full market value of the property. A deduction of up to 30% of adjusted gross income may be taken for long-term, appreciated, real estate donations. Any excess can be carried over for five years. You can also avoid paying capital gains tax on the property.
