Book Signing Ethnicity & Inequality in Hawai'i Sat., Aug. 16 · 10:30 a.m. In
Hawai‘i, does ethnicity play a role in how social and economic inequalities are
structured?
Dr. Jonathan Y. Okamura, an Associate
Professor in the Ethnic Studies Department at the University of Hawai‘i
at Mānoa, contends that it does and challenges the popular idea of Hawai‘i as a
place of ethnic tolerance and fairness in his newest book, Ethnicity and Inequality in Hawai‘i (Temple University Press,
2008).
At this JCCH event, Dr. Okamura
will discuss how ethnicity organizes social and cultural differences, including
disparities in socioeconomic status, among ethnic groups in Hawai‘i. His presentation will focus on the distinct
ethnic identities of Japanese and Okinawans in Hawai‘i and maintenance of the
social boundary between those two communities.
